Joint Statement on the Commencement of Ramadan 1447H
Ramadan 1447H - 2026
The Undersigned Scholars and Islamic Organizations of New Zealand take this blessed opportunity to congratulate the Muslim community on the approach of the blessed month of Ramadan. We call upon the Muslims of New Zealand to welcome this month with hearts united, holding fast to the rope of Allah, and remembering His saying:
وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا وَاذْكُرُوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ كُنْتُمْ أَعْدَاءً فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُمْ بِنِعْمَتِهِ إِخْوَانًا
"And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers..." (Quran 3:103)
1 The Methodology
This declaration is based on our collective decision to adopt "Imkan al-Ru'yah" (Possibility of Sighting) as the Sharia method for determining the lunar months. For those seeking the detailed Islamic legal proofs (Fiqh) regarding this approach, please refer to the full Fatwa.
This methodology connects Muslims in New Zealand with millions of believers in our neighboring countries. Instead of being isolated, it ensures we fast in unity with our brothers and sisters across the Pacific, Australia, and Southeast Asia. It also aligns us with the standards of major global bodies, including:
- ✓ International Congress of the Hijri Calendar (Istanbul 1978 and 2016)
- ✓ European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR)
- ✓ Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA)
2 Regarding the Moon Sighting for Ramadan
To ensure accuracy, we determine the start of the month by confirming if the moon is capable of being seen within our shared night region (New Zealand, Fiji & the Pacific Islands, Australia, and Southeast Asia).
For the moon to be seen, it must meet two conditions at sunset:
The new moon is born early on the morning of Wednesday, 18 February 2026 (NZ Time).
Based on accurate moon sighting reports, the moon will be too low to be seen in New Zealand on Wednesday evening. However, it rises higher and will be visible in our shared region—specifically in Fiji, the Pacific Islands, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Because the moon is confirmed to be visible within our region, the month officially begins.
3 The Official Announcement
Based on the above Sharia principles and certain knowledge of the moon's position, the undersigned Scholars and Organizations announce:
The Holy Month of Ramadan for this year 1447H – 2026 will commence on
Thursday, 19 February 2026
The First Night of Holy Month of Ramadan and Taraweeh Prayer will be on
Wednesday, 18th February 2026 after Sunset (after Isha)
A Call to Worship, Unity, and Solidarity
We invite you to embrace this magnificent month as a golden opportunity to purify your souls and attain Taqwa (God-consciousness). Let us turn sincerely to Allah through Fasting (Siyam) and Night Prayers (Qiyam), fully conscious of the immense rewards of this blessed season.
We urge you to safeguard the sanctity of your hearts by leaving aside differences that breed division. We are One Body, worshipping One Lord; let us transcend our disagreements and stand united in brotherhood.
And as we rejoice in Allah's mercy, we do not forget our brothers and sisters facing unimaginable hardship. We beseech Allah to grant relief, victory, and peace to our beloved family in Palestine and Sudan, and to aid the oppressed in every corner of the globe.

بيان بخصوص حلول شهر رمضان المبارك في نيوزيلندا لعام 1447هـ – 2026م
الحمد لله رب العالمين، والصلاة والسلام على المبعوث رحمة للعالمين، سيدنا محمد، وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين.
يغتنم العلماء والمنظمات الإسلامية الموقعون أدناه هذه الفرصة المباركة لتهنئة الجالية المسلمة في نيوزيلندا بقرب حلول شهر رمضان المبارك. وندعو مسلمي نيوزيلندا لاستقبال هذا الشهر بقلوب مؤتلفة، معتصمين بحبل الله، ومستذكرين قوله تعالى:
(وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا وَاذْكُرُوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ كُنْتُمْ أَعْدَاءً فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُمْ بِنِعْمَتِهِ إِخْوَانًا)
آل عمران: 103
أولاً: يستند هذا الإعلان إلى القرار الجماعي للمنظمات الموقعة أدناه باعتماد منهج "إمكانية الرؤية" كطريقة شرعية لتحديد دخول الأشهر القمرية.
إن هذه المنهجية تربط المسلمين في نيوزيلندا بملايين المؤمنين في الدول المجاورة والعالم الإسلامي الأوسع. فبدلاً من العزلة، تضمن لنا هذه المنهجية الصيام في وحدة وتناغم مع إخواننا وأخواتنا عبر المحيط الهادئ، وأستراليا، وجنوب شرق آسيا.
ثانياً: فيما يتعلق برؤية هلال رمضان:
لضمان الدقة، نحدد بداية الشهر من خلال التأكد من قابلية الهلال للرؤية داخل منطقة "اشتراك الليل" التي تجمعنا، والتي تشمل نيوزيلندا، وفيجي وجزر المحيط الهادئ، وأستراليا، وجنوب شرق آسيا.
ولتحقق الرؤية، يجب أن يستوفي الهلال شرطين علميَّين عند غروب الشمس:
- • الارتفاع: أن يكون ارتفاع الهلال 5 درجات على الأقل فوق الأفق.
- • الاستطالة (البعد الزاوي): أن يبعد الهلال عن الشمس بمقدار 8 درجات على الأقل.
يولد الهلال الجديد في وقت مبكر من صباح يوم الأربعاء، 18 فبراير 2026 (بتوقيت نيوزيلندا). وبناءً على تقارير رصد الأهلة الدقيقة، سيكون الهلال منخفضاً جداً بحيث لا يمكن رؤيته في نيوزيلندا مساء يوم الأربعاء. ومع ذلك، فإنه يرتفع أكثر ويحقق شروط الرؤية في منطقتنا المشتركة.
ثالثاً: بناءً على المبادئ الشرعية المذكورة أعلاه والعلم اليقيني بوضع القمر، يعلن العلماء والمنظمات الموقعون أدناه:

الليلة الأولى من شهر رمضان المبارك وصلاة التراويح ستكون مساء يوم الأربعاء، 18 فبراير 2026 (بعد صلاة العشاء مباشرة)
أخيراً: نوجه دعوة للعبادة، والوحدة، والتضامن.
ندعوكم لاغتنام هذا الشهر العظيم كفرصة ذهبية لتزكية النفوس وتحقيق التقوى. فلنتوجه بصدق وإخلاص إلى الله من خلال الصيام والقيام، مستشعرين عظمة الأجر في هذا الموسم المبارك.
كما نحثكم على حماية سلامة قلوبكم بترك الخلافات والجدال الذي لا يورث إلا الفرقة. فنحن جسد واحد، نعبد رباً واحداً؛ فلنترفع عن خلافاتنا ولنقف صفاً واحداً متآخين. وبينما نفرح برحمة الله، لا ننسى إخواننا وأخواتنا الذين يواجهون شدائد لا توصف. نبتهل إلى الله أن يمنّ بالفرج والنصر والسلام على أهلنا في فلسطين والسودان، وأن ينصر المظلومين في كل مكان.
